Helping Black boys and young Black men aim higher and achieve more

REACH National Role Models

Be an inspiration. Make a difference.

The Communities Secretary, Hazel Blears, with Baroness Scotland and Kwame Kwei-Armah, introduced the 20 REACH National Role Models to an audience of over 300 in London on Wednesday 3rd December.

The REACH Panel – Tim Campbell, Simon Woolley, Leroy Logan and Ozwald Boateng – together with a group of exceptional young men from around the country, selected the final 20 national role models in November.

These role models will go into schools and youth projects to talk about their personal journeys. They will encourage young people to set their sights high and will offer advice and support. They will help to build a much larger and wider programme of mentoring work in their regions and communities and work with national and local media to support young men in raising their levels of ambition.

"We are working towards a society where every Black boy and young Black man can fulfil his potential"

What is REACH?

REACH is a programme for Black boys and young Black men, supporting and inspiring them to raise their aspirations, attainment and achievement.

Last year an independent group of 25 members of the Black community produced a report which resulted in the formation of REACH. They made five recommendations to improve the futures of Black boys and young Black men:

  • improve the visibility of positive Black role models
  • create stronger links between Black families and schools
  • improve reporting on race equality in schools
  • ensure strong ministerial oversight of action to implement REACH
  • encourage third sector organisations that support young Black
    men to share their efforts
